Cloud Platform End-of-Life
The SmartFile Cloud Platform is End-of-Life as of November 15, 2024.
In July 2023, SmartFile was acquired by Files.com, the largest SaaS Managed File Transfer vendor. Files.com provides file transfer services to over 4,000 businesses, including hundreds of large enterprises.
Nearly all former customers of the SmartFile cloud platform have been migrated to Files.com's modern platform. The following End-of-Life notice applies to the few remaining customers of SmartFile's cloud platform.
This End-of-Life Notice does not apply to our On-Premise offering (formerly called FileHub), which continues to be actively supported.
About Files.com
Files.com offers a modern File Transfer platform with capabilities that far exceed the aging SmartFile platform in every dimension. We have already reached out to your company about transitioning your services to the modern Files.com platform.
This transition is free of charge. Files.com's technical and support staff are extremely experienced in upgrading customers to the Files.com platform.
Files.com offers a much more modern platform than SmartFile and once on the new platform, you will have far more capabilities than you had before, all for the same low price you're currently paying. See below to learn more about all the additional features you'll get for free on the new platform.
Your current SmartFile subdomains and SFTP host keys will be supported forever. Files and folders will stay in the same place. Passwords for users and shares will remain the same. SSH keys will continue to work. FTP and SFTP will continue to work. Share links and direct links will continue to work exactly the way they do now, and you should not need to re-send any invitations.
The Files.com platform supports 7 storage regions, built in Editor, stronger security features, encryption at rest, more options for 2FA, better permissions and administration delegation, a better desktop app, command line app, better API, better SDKs, SOC-2 Type II compliance, custom domains, dedicated IPs, cloud integrations, automations, workflows, SSO, GPG, watermarking, and more.
The Files.com platform is also where all of our R&D, innovation, and technical efforts are directed.
SmartFile End of Life
It is our desire to sunset the legacy SmartFile platform immediately because it has critical deficiencies that prevent us from providing the same level of assurance and support that we provide on our Files.com platform. In addition to the simple lack of features, these critical deficiencies include:
Critical software and hardware components are considered end-of-life by their vendors and no longer receive security updates. Specifically, it is no longer possible to replace critical components for the storage infrastructure used by SmartFile.
The SmartFile application software contains critical bugs that are known to cause data loss.
SmartFile lacks all of the necessary underlying infrastructure to support SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance, which are in place on the newer Files.com platform.
There is no meaningful operational infrastructure nor integration into our support tooling, which dramatically limits our ability to troubleshoot tough issues.
Because of the critical deficiencies in the SmartFile platform and our success in seamlessly migrating customers to Files.com, we have declared November 15, 2024 as the final end-of-life date for the legacy SmartFile platform.
After November 15, we will not provide any customer support whatsoever for customers still on the SmartFile platform, nor will we push any further software updates or bug fixes. We will no longer maintain any backup systems nor backups of any data. Should any larger incidents occur, such as downtime, hardware failure, etc., we will no longer respond after hours, and will no longer guarantee that we will respond at all or recover the system at all.
We encourage all customers to schedule a migration date before November 15.
After November 15, we will continue to work with un-migrated customers to get their services migrated to Files.com.
After December 15, any remaining SmartFile customers will be migrated to Files.com by us, without coordinating with you. We will be fully powering off all SmartFile services by the end of December.
The Migration Is Easily Achievable and Automated
The migration process to Files.com is a thoroughly vetted and mostly automated process. We have performed over 3,000 upgrades to Files.com over the past 2 years, and the vast majority of SmartFile customers have already migrated to the newer platform. Our team does these all day and we are committed to having them go well.
While there are some manual interventions you may have to do, we are committed to making your migration as smooth as possible.
Thanks For Your Business
We understand that a forced migration is jarring and creates extra work for you and your business. We hope that you can appreciate the carefully considered reasons that we chose this path.
While it may create some temporary frustration, we are confident that the end result will allow us to better support your business for decades to come.
We’re committed to keeping Files.com the leading SaaS platform for Managed File Transfer. We have a long roadmap of feature ideas and we’re excited to continue innovating well into the future.
